International conference on "Special Functions and Applications (ICSFA)- 2013" 13/12/2013 To 15/12/2013

Departments of Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering, Malaviya National Institute of Engineering, Jaipur organized the 'International conference on Special Functions and Applications (ICSFA)- 2013' during December 13-15, 2013. This was the XII annual conference of the 'Society for Special Functions and Their Applications' (SSFA).
Inaugural function on first day of the conference started with invoking the blessings of almighty and lighting of lamp. The dignitaries on the dais were welcomed and the function was presided by Dr. Ravindra Nagar, Department of Civil Engineering, acting director, MNIT Jaipur. Chief Guest of the occasion was Hon. Vice Chancellor Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak, Vardhman Mahaveer Open University, Kota.
Welcome address and overview of the conference were given by Dr. Rashmi Jain, Convener ICSFA-2013. A brief overview about history and present status of the Department of Mathematics was told by Dr. Vatsala Mathur, HOD.
The President SSFA, Dr. A.K. Agarwal talked about the importance of special functions and mathematics in today's perspective and quoted many examples to link mathematics with practical situations. The report of the activities of SSFA held during the year 2013-13 was given by Dr. M.A. Pathan, General Secretary, SSFA.
Prof. Ravindra Nagar, Acting director, MNIT spoke about the standards of MNIT and need of organizing such conferences in the Institute. He welcomed all the participants and wish them to have a enjoyable stay in Jaipur and fruitful deliberations.
Chief guest of the occasion gave his inaugural address mentioning the importance of mathematics in all disciplines of sciences, humanities and engineering. He declared the conference open.
The conference Souvenir was released to commemorate the event, by the Chief Guest and all the dignitaries present on the dais.
Dr. Ritu Agarwal, Organizing secretary, ICSFA 2013 proposed vote of thanks to all. Inaugural function was followed by a group photograph and Hi-tea.
First plenary session of the Conference consisted of Presidential Address by Dr. A.K. Agarwal, Punjab University on 'Mock Theta Functions and Combinatorics' which is based on Ramanujan's work.
Third in series R.P. Agarwal Memorial lecture was delivered by Dr. A.M. Mathai, McGill University, Canada viz. 'A new look at fractional calculus with reference to matrix-variate functions and statistical perspective'. He gave a new perspective and view of looking at fractional integral and differential operator which will benefit the mathematicians working in that area.
Competition for awards was held in the next session. ICSFA-2013 awards three prizes viz. A.K Agarwal prize consisting of a certificate and a cash prize for best publication of the year, which was awarded to Dr. S.D. Purohit, M.P University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur. M.I. Quereshi and Aruna Gupta prize consisting of a certificate and cash prize each for best paper presentation. M.I Quereshi prize was awarded to Ms. Rachna Sachdeva, Punjab University and Aruna Gupta prize was awarded to Garima Sood, Punjab University.
Second technical session of the conference consisted of two parallel paper presentation sessions chaired by Prof. C. Adiga, University of Mysore and Prof Ahmad Ali, Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow. In this session papers were presented on Basic functions and Special functions respectively. Around twenty papers were presented in this session.
This was followed by a plenary session chaired by Dr. V.P. Saxena, in which Dr. Renu Jain gave a talk on 'Lie Algebraic approach to fractional calculus'.
Second day started with plenary session chaired by Dr. M.A. Pathan. This session consisted of three invited talks which were delivered by Prof Jiang Zeng, Prof. C. Adiga and Prof. Somshekharan.
It was followed by a symposium on 'Applications in Diverse Fields of Engineering and Technology' which was chaired by Dr. Avdhesh Bhardwaj, Department of Mechanical Engineering, MNIT Jaipur. This session consisted of ten paper presentations viz. 'some results of length of path in connected graph and tree' by Richa Jain, 'Revisiting multiple integrals: a paraboloidal tank calibration problem' by R.B. Gandhi, 'optimization of biodiesel production from thumba oil using response surface' by Sunny Soni, 'How differential equations influence the tumor growth via mathematical models' by M.A. Khan and 'Solution of biological model in perturbation method' by Giriraj Methi etc.
Fourth plenary session was chaired by Prof. Jiang Zeng, University of Lyon, France which consisted of five invited talks by Dr. A. Swaminathan, IIT Roorkee, Prof. V.P. Saxena, ex Vice-Chancellor of Giwaji university, Gwalior, Dr. M.A. Pathan, Gen. Secretary SSFA, Dr. Subuhi Khan, A.M.U, Dr. Meenakshi Rana, Thapar university, Patiala.
Next were two concurrent technical sessions in which more than ten papers were presented on fractional calculus, special functions and geometric function theory.
The last day of the conference started with Plenary session which included invited talks by Prof. A.K. Shukla, NIT Surat and Dr. Ahmad Ali, Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow followed by two concurrent technical sessions which included more than fifteen paper presentations.
The Conference concluded with General body meeting of the Society for Special Functions (SSFA) in which Prof. M.A. Pathan presented the minutes of Executive Committee of SSFA. This meeting was followed by valedictory function. Dr. K.C Gupta was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function.
Awards were given to the prize winners of A. K. Agarwal Prize, M. I. Quereshi prize and Aruna Gupta prize.
A brief report of the three day Conference was presented by Dr. Ritu Agarwal, Organising Secretary, ICSFA-2013. She mentioned that more than 120 delegates from India and abroad participated in the conference and About 80 papers were presented during 10 technical sessions. Eleven talks were delivered in the five plenary sessions.
Valedictory address was given by Dr. Kantesh Gupta, Co-convener, ICSFA-2013. Dr. K.C Gupta spoke on the need of doing good research work and inspired the young mathematics and the teaching fraternity with his words of wisdom.
The certificates were distributed to all the delegates. Some of the delegates shared their experiences of the conference. The conference ended with a vote of thanks given by Dr. Sanjay Bhatter, Organising Secretary, ICSFA-2013 followed by lunch.
