One-week program on Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Security Challenge Competition, July 09-13, 2018


Cybersecurity attacks are a looming threat and remains a major concern for our society. Shortage of cyber security expert add woes to it. One of the ways to improve cybersecurity competence is through the cyber security competitions. Organization of/participation in such events requires an understanding of offensive and defensive computing strategies. One-week program on "Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Security Challenge Competition" on such strategies has been developed and organized by Department of Computer Science and Engineering, MNIT Jaipur during July 9-13, 2018. This course is organized under ISEA-Il1 Bilateral / International cooperation.

Course Title: Cyber Security Awareness and Cyber Security Challenge Competition

Course Duration: July 9-13, 2018 (24 hours/week; 3 hours/day lecture and 3 hours/day lab)

Venue: NKN-II, Third Floor, Prabha Bhawan, MNIT Jaipur

Topics:
    Day 1: Attack Methodologies: Lectures/Tutorials and Labs
    Day 2: Web Application Penetration Testing: Lectures/Tutorials and Labs
    Day 3: Program Analysis for Cyber Security: Lectures/Tutorials and Labs
    Day 4: System Hardening and Log Analysis: Lectures/Tutorials and Labs
    Day 5: Competition framework demonstration and tournament
Also, included are the advanced techniques, in particular Penetration Testing, and program analysis.

Objectives:
   1. To prepare the software engineers of today for securing cyberspace through exposure to offensive as well as defensive techniques in programming.
   2. To prepare the instructors for organizing such events.

Course Deliverables: Upon completion, successful participants will be able to detect and analyze security vulnerabilities in applications/software.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of one high-level programming language; basics of cyber security.

Course Instructor: Benjamin Holland, Research Assistant, Iowa State University. Ben has vast experience of cybersecurity competitions as a participant as well as a volunteer organizer and Instructor of NIST.

   1. Iowa State University IT Olympics (2015): Developed a vulnerable, load balanced, social video sharing web application
   2. Iowa State University National Cyber Defense Competition (2014) - Developed a vulnerable web application along with a zeroday attack for remote code execution
   3. Iowa State University Cyber Defense Competition (2013) - Developed a vulnerable web application in Scala along with storyline and competition day challenges

Accommodation: Limited number of guest house and hostel rooms available on First Come First Served basis. Cost of boarding and lodging shall be borne by the applicant. Please note that no TA/DA shall be paid for this event by MNIT Jaipur. Course participants may have to deposit complete amount expected for their stay with Guest House/Hostel on arrival.

Webstreaming: Link for live webstreaming shall be made available in first week of July. Please note that no TA/DA shall be paid to participants by MNIT Jaipur.
