Program summary of "Finishing School for Engineering Students" 27/01/2014 To 31/01/2014

The Department of Management Studies, MNIT Jaipur organized a Finishing School for Engineering Students during January 27-31, 2014. The program was coordinated by Dr. Deepak Verma and Dr. Satish Kumar from the department. The program was sponsored and funded by TEQIP cell of MNIT Jaipur.
A total of 61 students, 47 from MNIT Jaipur and 14 from other engineering institutions from Rajasthan registered for the program. The participants belonging to different streams of engineering and predominantly were in their third or fourth year of engineering, registered for the program.
This finishing school was organized with an intend to fill the void of formal soft skills training along with technical education and provide young engineering students with a complete educational experience bridging gap between the core technical skills focused curriculum and industry required soft skills. Specifically, the program focused on grooming skills related to formal and informal communication, enhancing personal effectiveness, understanding basic business functions and soft skills necessary to foster personal and professional success of engineering graduates.
The program started on January 27, 2014 at 10:00 with a short inauguration attended by Prof. GS Dangayach, Prof. APS Rathore, Prof. Awadhesh Bhardwaj and Dr. Monica Sharma from Department of Management Studies, MNIT Jaipur. Dr. Deepak Verma started the proceeding with a brief introduction of the Finishing School and its schedule. The inaugural session was followed by a workshop on formal and informal communication skills by Dr. Vidhu Gaur from MDI, Gurgaon. Her afternoon session involved on-field outdoor exercises for a better understanding of interpersonal dynamics in communication. The evening session of the day was conducted by Prof. Pankaj Sharma from CDLU Sirsa and a Cambridge trained language expert. His highly interactive session focused on public speaking and related dimensions.
Prof. Pankaj Sharma conducted a workshop in forenoon of January 28, 2014 on how to preparing individual CV and face interviews/group discussions. A well prepared CV was the key take-away for the students from this workshop. The afternoon session of the day was conducted by Dr. Monica Sharma from Department of Management Studies, MNIT Jaipur and was focused on delivering professional presentations in formal environment. The evening session focused on basic marketing skills and its relevance to engineering as profession. This session was delivered by Dr. Deepak Verma from Department of Management Studies, MNIT Jaipur.
Dr. Shweta Kushal from IIM, Indore was the resource person for the sessions conducted on January 29, 2014. She conducted two hands-on practical workshops on business etiquettes and dining etiquettes respectively. Her afternoon sessions were focused on developing cross-cultural and gender appreciation in work environment.
Dr. Anil Sethi, a well-established corporate trainer and MD - Sysmatic International Education and Management Services, New Delhi engaged sessions on January 30, 2014. The focus of Dr. Sethi's sessions was on personal development based upon ethical conduct and introspection. His highly interactive sessions stressed on establishing links between personal emotional development with success in managing interpersonal communication and relationships.
On last day of the Finishing School the key resource persons were Mr. Harinder Singh, Director (Technical), Department of Official Languages, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India and Prof. Urvashi Makkar, Director, Institute of Management Studies, Ghaziabad. Their activity-based workshops included management games, role plays, etc. and focused on enhancing personal effectiveness by developing skills related to time management, interpersonal, leadership and emotional intelligence.
The valedictory session was conducted at the end of the Finishing School and certificates of participation were distributed among the participants by Mr. Harinder Kumar, Prof. Urvashi Makkar and Prof. GS Dangayach. The Finishing School concluded with vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Satish Kumar.
The program achieved its objectives as the formal session-wise feedback from the participants indicated high level of appreciations for the content, delivery and resource persons for all sessions of the program. All participants indicated they are highly benefited attending the program.
